Fantastic fancy dress and fundraising for Red Nose Day

Thousands of pounds have been raised by children, parents, teachers and groups in the Western Wards for Comic Relief.

Donned in red, colourful and wacky costumes with honking noses, everyone looked the part for the national charity fundraising day today (March 15) in aid of less fortunate children in Africa. (See our pic gallery at the bottom of the page)

From a sponsored silence and a bouncing challenge at St John’s School to pupils acting as journalists for the day reporting on the fundraising events at Sarisbury Infants, there were so many smiles for the efforts.

At St John’s School Italia Jeal, 11, and Maisie Whybrow, 10, zipped their mouths for the day doing a three and a half hour sponsored silence, while Ellis Wood, eight, raised money by doing 1,000 bounces with some sports equipment.

All pupils learned about a young boy called Robert who lives with hundreds of other people in slums in Kenya. They also learned the differences between their culture and that in Kenya.

Youngsters at Jigsaw Pre-school, attached to St John’s School, told jokes and made Red Nose Day pizzas, while dressed in red.

Staff baked and sold cakes at the Western Wards schools, while Hook-with-Warsash pupils came as comedy figures by wearing their clothes back to front, zooming around as characters such a Zorro and wearing wigs.

Pupil Isaac Greave was mentioned for his Comic Relief Lego animation YouTube clip which has raised around £800.

Locks Heath Junior School pupils dressed in every colour possible to raise funds for children abroad and the staff had a cake sale to raise money.

Meanwhile Brookfield students held scores of games and contests, from soak the teacher to cricket competitions and typing challenges. Cheerleaders performed tricks and crowds watched a battle between the pupils at the inflatable bungee competition.

The school event, organised by the Media Diploma students, raised around £3,000 with the activities and cakes, biscuits and doughnut sales. Not to mention that the 360 doughnuts were all sold within 20 minutes.
